National Institute of Design (NID) is an ‘Institute of National Importance’ as per the NID Act 2014 as well as an autonomous institute under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. As per the NID Act (18 of 2014), the institute is a statutory authority empowered to award its own degrees— Masters of Design (M.Des.) of two-and-a-half years duration and Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) of four-year duration. The Institute is also a member of the Association ofIndian Universities (AIU).

NID Vijayawada is an independent autonomous institute under the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and offers four-year long Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD).

NID Kurukshetra is an independent autonomous institute under the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and offers four-year long Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD).

Admission to all of the design courses will be granted on the basis of a two-stage competitive exam. The objective of these exams is to assess the knowledge, skills and behavioural abilities of candidates.

Stage 1: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims
Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims will be conducted at various test centres across India (See Section 7). Candidates should note that appearing for the DAT Prelims or being ranked in the shortlist does not guarantee automatic entitlement to admission.

Stage 2: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Mains
Candidates shortlisted after the DAT Prelims will be invited to appear for the Stage 2 DAT Main exams at one of NID’s campuses in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru or Gandhinagar.

Note:
• Candidates are solely responsible to provide correct information during the application process. If it is found that any information provided by the candidate is not true, NID has the right to cancel, at any stage, the candidate’s application or admission in accordance with its rules and regulations. Any direct or indirect attempt to influence the management and employees of the institute will lead to automatic disqualification of the candidate.

• Furthermore, the Institute has the sole prerogative to determine the procedure for each cycle of admission. In case of any matter not covered in this handbook, NID’s decisions shall be considered final and binding on all the parties concerned.

• Candidates applying under Overseas (supernumerary) category will have to appear for the DAT (Prelims) and DAT (Mains) In the Test Centre at Ahmedabad only.

The two-and-a-half year long Master of Design (M.Des.) programme at NID is offered at
its campuses in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar. Students may apply in any of

Note:
• In addition to the number of seats mentioned above, 2 seats per specialisation are allotted for overseas (supernumerary) candidates.
• Prescribed percentage of seats are reserved for candidates (Indian nationals) belonging to various reserved categories as per the Government of India guidelines (See Section 5 for more information).
• Aspiring candidates can apply to a maximum of ONLY TWO disciplines for the Master of Design programme.
• Applications are received to a specific discipline only and are not transferable at any stage of the admissions process

3.2 Bachelor of Design (B.Des.)

The four-year-long Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) programme is offered only at NID
Ahmedabad in the following areas of specialisation:

Faculty of Industrial Design:

2. Furniture Design (10 seats)
3. Product Design (15 seats)

Faculty of Communication Design:
4. Animation Film Design (15 seats)

Faculty of Textile, Apparel & Lifestyle Accessory Design:

Note:
• The first year of this programme is a mandatory foundation course, only after which students can select their specialisation based on their performance and on the number of seats available.

• Number of seats for Indian Nationals in Bachelor of Design programme, including reserved categories is One Hundred (100).

• Prescribed percentage of seats are reserved for candidates (Indian nationals) belonging to various reserved categories as per the Government of India guidelines (See Section 5 for more information).

• The total number of seats for overseas (supernumerary) candidates is Fifteen (15).

Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD)

The four-year-long Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) is offered at NID
Vijayawada and NID Kurukshetra in the following areas of specialisation:

1. Industrial Design
2. Communication Design
3. Textile & Apparel Design

Note:
• Successful candidates admitted to the GDPD programme at NID Vijayawada and NID Kurukshetra will be required to attend a mandatory foundation programme of one-year duration. Allotment of a discipline of choice is based on a candidate’s merit and choice only after successful completion of the foundation programme.

Eligibility

Master of Design (M.Des.)
Candidates applying for the M.Des. programme (any discipline) must fulfill the following criteria:

Age Limit:
Candidates upto 30 years of age on or before 30 June 2017 are eligible to apply (relaxable by three years for candidates belonging to reserved category).
Indian Nationals in the general category and candidates in overseas category born on or before 30 June 1987 are not eligible for admission.
Indian Nationals in reserved category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD) born on or before 30 June 1984 are not eligible for admission.

Educational Qualification:
Applicants must either have appeared for (results awaited), passed, or will be appearing for any of the following degree examinations before July 2017:
Bachelor’s degree in any discipline under the 10+2+4 (or more) system,from any university or institute recognised by law in India.
Diploma in design under the 10+2+4 system, from any university or institute recognised by law in India.
OR
Applicants must either have appeared for (results awaited) or passed, before July 2016, a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline under the 10+2+3 system from any university or institute recognised by law in India.

Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) and Graduate Diploma 
Programme in Design (GDPD)
Candidates applying for the B.Des. and GDPD programmes must fulfill the following criteria:

Age Limit:
Candidates upto 20 years of age on or before 30 June 2017 are eligible to apply (relaxable
by three years for candidates belonging to reserved category).

Indian nationals applying in the general category and candidates in overseas category
born on or before 30 June 1997 are not eligible.

Indian nationals in reserved category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD) born on or before 30 June
1994 are not eligible.

Educational Qualification:
Applications for academic year 2017–18 are open to applicants who have passed or will
appear for higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examinations in the academic year 2016–17
from any recognised board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or their equivalent.
